A London-based university with an annual income of approximately £300 million needed a Chief Information Digital Officer to lead major change across its technology directorate. The role was initially offered on a 12-month fixed-term contract, with the goal of driving improvements in digital infrastructure, reducing IT debt, and implementing a new operating model.
McLean was tasked with identifying someone who could work at pace within a high-governance environment, while also bringing insights from outside the education sector. The search focused on individuals with experience managing complex transformation in both academic and broader public sector settings.
A shortlist was delivered within seven days. Two standout candidates were presented, one with a strong background in higher education, and another with consulting and public sector credentials. The university moved quickly, completing a two-stage process and appointing the successful candidate within three weeks. After 12 months, the appointment was made permanent. The individual was commended by the COO for the significant impact they had during a period of institutional change.
